It was another banner year, at least for the early NCAA November signing period, for the Chattahoochee Valley Pirate Baseball Team. With a sophomore laden club, particularly on the pitching staff, seven Pirate sophomores sealed their future with the signing of their letters of intent to play at the next level of four-year collegiate baseball.
Of those seven, there were six Division I signees, with one NAIA signee (in alphabetical order:
CASEY COBB RHP – University of Alabama
Casey is headed to the University of Alabama after an All-American freshman year in which he won the ACCC Pitchers Triple Crown and was named the ACCC and ABCA Pitcher of the Year. Cobb went 10-4 with a 1.29 ERA with 7 complete games and added 96 strikeouts to only 20 walks in 90. 2 innings.
CHARLES CROSBY RHP – Samford University
Charles has inked his deal with Samford University after a freshman season that saw him log the second most innings on the team with 46.2 in 16 appearances as a starter, reliever and closer. Going 4-3 with a 2.51 ERA, Chuck recorded 41 punchouts in 8 starts and 8 relief appearances.
COLE GANOPULOS LHP – University of South Carolina
After transferring from Auburn University in January, Cole stepped in to the role as conference starter during the second week of conference play and simply went 6-0 in 7 starts on the season, all being in conference action. In 40.2 innings of work, Ganop recorded 32 strikeouts to 12 walks and posted a 1.33 ERA.
BRANDON HILL CF/LHP – University of Alabama
Brandon was the most unique of all our signees as he is headed to Tuscaloosa in January of 2018. After a stellar freshman season and on the way to an All Conference sophomore year, Hill’s season was cut short by injury. Hill decided to return to CV this fall to complete his degree requirements and was rewarded by The Tide for his efforts. As a freshman, BHill hit .279 with 9 homers, 10 doubles, 2 triples, 51 RBI’s, 69 runs scored, 45 walks and 22 stolen bases and was the premier defensive centerfielder in the ACCC. Before his sophomore season was cut short, Brandon was hitting .291 with 1 homer, 8 doubles, a triple, with 20 RBI’s, 26 runs, and 14 stolen bases.
KENDALL MARSHALL RHP – Middle Georgia State University
Another unique circumstance, Kendall entered this fall as a redshirt sophomore after limited work as a freshman, but progressed nicely and was offered the opportunity to move on to MGSU in January, where he elected to sign. Kendall posted a 1-0 record as a reliever with a 2.45 ERA and averaged more than a strikeout per inning pitched.
JACOB MENDERS RHP – Virginia Military Institute
As a transfer from Shippensburg State in Pennsylvania, Menders has stepped in as one of the top pitchers on the Pirate staff for 2018. Armed with a big fastball and command of 4 pitches, Jacob will be counted on to be one of the conference starters for CVCC. The Virginia native will certainly compete with Cobb and company as one of the top pitchers in the ACCC this season.
HUNTER PHILLIPS RHP – University of South Alabama
Hunter came to CVCC as a transfer from Georgia Southern this fall after recovering from Tommy John surgery. The Warner Robins native has impressed as a power pitcher whose fastball reaches the low to mid 90’s with a power slider. Phillips, a workhorse and extreme competitor, will be counted on to be one of the closers for the Pirates this spring with overpowering stuff to do the job.
