Pirates Stay Hot, Take Two More Over CACC and Andrew

After a season opening loss, the Pirates of the Chattahoochee have rolled off 7 straight wins, with the latest coming from a 2 game homestand this weekend against Central Alabama Community College and Andrew College.

On Thursday, CVCC hosted the Trojans from CACC, sending freshman sensation, Charles Crosby to the mound for his second start.  Crosby was, once again, in command from the get go, as he tossed 5 complete, allowing only 2 runs, 1 earned, while scattering 5 hits and punching out a career high 7 batters.

The Trojans began the scoring in the second with a pair of doubles to give CACC a short lived 1-0 lead, as the Pirate offense immediately responded with a run in the 2nd on Jayson Cook’s RBI single and added 2 more in the 3rd, led by a Kurt Ornowski run scoring base hit to take a 3-1 lead.

Crosby took over from there and went into shutdown mode until he tired in the 5th.  A leadoff walk eventually scored on a passed ball, but Crosby buckled down and struck out the side to end his day and hold a 3-2 lead.

Meanwhile, the Pirate offense went cold for the next 3 innings as Coleman Barbee made his 2017 debut and tossed a 1-2-3 6th before walking the leadoff batter in the 7th.  Sawyer Steele came on to clean up the mess and was sharp, inducing a a 5U-3 double play along with a strikeout, but the Pirates were victim of another run scoring passed ball, allowing CACC to knot the game at 3 apiece.

However, the Pirate offense exploded for 6 runs in the 7th to practically put the game away.  AJ Willoughby and Carson Hughes got things going with a single and double respectively, then Nick Poskey followed them up with the at bat of the game to deliver a 2 run single.  A sac bunt by Tre Kirklin was followed by an MJ Rookard single, a Jack Copley HBP and another Cook RBI single.  Isaac Phillips finished off the inning with a 2 out single to give the Pirates a 9-2 lead.

JD Brown tossed a beautiful 1-2-3 8th to give the Pirates a much needed shut down inning as the Pirates gave the bullpen 2 more runs to cushion the lead.  An RBI HBP by Rookard and an RBI groundout by Copley keyed the 2 run 8th.

The Trojans made a run in the 9th, scoring 4 runs on 2 walks and 3 hits, before Alex Graulich struck out the final batter of the game to secure an 11-7 win for the swashbucklers.

On Saturday, the Pirates brought out the Ghost Uniforms for their Saturday home game against Andrew College.  Casey Cobb took the mound and threw one of the best games in recent history at Howard Lake Field.

Cobb tossed 7 2/3 innings of 2 hit, shutout baseball, while striking out 13 Fighting Tigers and giving Andrew absolutely no chance of scoring, as offense came at a premium for both teams all day.

Chatt Valley jumped on the board in the 2nd inning and gave Cobb and Company all of the run support they would need, as 3 2 out singles, the last by Isaac Phillips, gave CVCC an early 1-0 lead.

While Cobb was carving, the Pirate offense struggled to put anything together, but plated a huge insurance run in the 6th when Carson Hughes led off with a walk and advanced to 2nd on Jon Jon Foster’s sac bunt.  Two batters later with 2 out, that man again, Nick Poskey, delivered an RBI single to extend the lead to 2-0.

Cobb kept dealing and and pitched into the 8th inning.  After allowing only his second hit, he recorded the next 2 outs before giving way to Pierce Smith who induced an inning ending popup on the only pitch he threw to keep the shutout intact.

Closer Tyler Elkins came on in the 9th and did Tyler Elkin’s things, as he continued his run of saves to finish off the Tigers of Andrew in the 2-0 win.

The Pirates are now 7-1 and will travel to Carrollton, Georgia on Monday, February 13th to face the Golden Knights of West Georgia Tech for a 1:15 eastern start.
