Game 2 was a roll of the dice for Coach Vick and his Black Squad, as he turned to closer Tyler Elkins to START Game 2 of the B & B Series. Having thrown no more than 2 consecutive innings all fall, Elkins put on a show, tossing a complete game in an 8-3 win.
In a match up with Team Blue’s Sawyer Steele, this game had all of the makings of a classic pitching duel. Steele retired the Vicks in order in the first 2 innings, while 2 errors in the top of the first by Team Black cost Elkins an unearned run, giving Blue the early 1-0 lead.
Black finally put some gas in the offense in third, as they chased Steele, sending 9 batters to the plate, en route to a 3 run inning. With 3 consecutive singles by Austin Zeitler, MJ Rookard, and Jaylen Smith to begin the inning, Brandon Hill delivered the big blow with a 2 run single to put Black on top 3-1.
Elk went into absolute Beast Mode from there, shutting out the Blues over the next 4 frames, before surrendering 2 more unearned runs in the 6th. It didn’t matter, however, as the Blacks continued to add to their lead, scoring 3 more in the 5th and an a pair of runs in the top of the 7th, with Carson Hughes chipping in a sac fly to push the final score to 8-3, as Coach Vick’s squad evened the series at 1 game apiece.
During Elkins CG gem, of the 21 outs he recorded, only 3 came via a popup, as he induced 13 ground ball outs, while striking out 5 on the day.
