Returning to the AUM Umpire Tournament for the first time in nearly 5 years, the Pirates had the opportunity to take on outstanding competition in Faulkner State and Southern Union while in Montgomery. Once the night ended, the Pirates settled for a 6-6 tie with Faulkner State, while blasting the Bison of SU in a 9-1 win.
Game 1 saw two Southern Division rivals continue, what is always, a hard fought battle on the diamond. With Chandler Newman getting the start, he tossed 3 nice innings, surrendering 3 runs, with only 1 being earned, while allowing only 2 hits and striking out 4 Sun Chiefs.
With FSCC taking the early 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning, the Pirates responded immediately in the bottom half, as they strung together 4 singles in the inning by Carson Hughes, Jaylen Smith, Jack Copley and Tre Kirklin to knot the game at 2 apiece.
With Faulkner taking the 3-2 lead in the 3rd, the Pirates, once again, came from behind to tie the game at 3-3 on a Jaylen Smith solo homer.
Parker Boyle relieved Newman and pitched the 4th and 5th in dominant fashion and would have kept the the score tied if not for bad defense, as the Chiefs regained the lead in the 5th on a sac fly, that was proceeded by a Chatt Valley error.
Down 4-3, CVCC answered right back in the bottom half, scoring 3 runs to take what looked like a comfortable 6-4 lead. With Zach Cable reaching on a one out error by FSCC, Isaac Phillips singled and Jayson Cook walked to load the bases, leading to Kurt Ornowski’s 2 run single to give Chatt Valley the lead, while AJ Willoughby followed him up with an RBI single of his own to get to the 6-4 score.
Once again, it was defense that let the Pirates down, as Faulkner scored 2 unearned runs in the 6th to tie the game at 6. Although, Garrett Fowler did his part in shutting down the Chief offense, the Pirates went quietly in the 6th and 7th as the game ended in a 6-all tie.
Game 2 was a fast start and a strong finish by the Pirates, as in the top of the first against Southern Union, CVCC jumped out to a 5-0 lead, as back to back HBP’s to Kurt Ornowski and Jack Copley, led to a run scoring single by Carson Hughes. After a Brandon Hill walk, MJ Rookard delivered a 2 run double with Johnny Devine adding an RBI single to stun the Bison right out of the gate.
The 5 run cushion was all starter Casey Cobb needed in his 4 innings of work, allowing only 5 hits and a single run en route to a 4 strikeout outing.
If a 5 run first wasn’t enough, the Pirates came right back swinging in the 2nd, adding 4 more runs, with Jay Meuse singling in an epic at bat to start the inning, while Isaac Phillips and Kurt Ornowski followed with back to back walks. A fielder’s choice by Jack Copley had Meuse thrown out at the plate, but kept the bases loaded with two out. Brandon Hill delivered a 2 run single with Rookard smashing another 2 run double to extend the Pirate lead to 9-0 after only 2 innings.
With Cobb finishing his 4 innings of work and holding the score at 9-1, Carson Hicks tossed a 1-2-3 5th with Tyler Elkins closing things out in the 6th with a 1-2-3 inning of his on to end the time shortened game at 6 innings in a 9-1 win in favor of the good guys.
The Pirates lifted their fall record to 6-2-2 on the scrimmage season, as they would next head to the University of West Georgia to see Central Alabama for the 3rd and 4th time of the fall in a double header in Carrollton, GA.
