After a pre-season piece of humble pie down in the Panhandle of Gulf Coast, the Pirates went to work to address some issues in an 0 for 4 effort in Panama City. The work showed up in a positive fashion, as Chattahoochee Valley 4 hit the Trojans of Central Alabama for a 5-3 win on Tuesday.
Jordan Lee toed the rubber to open the home slate for the Pirates, and was in complete control from the first pitch. Other than an unearned run on a sure fire double play in the first, Lee was electric, allowing only 3 hits and striking out a career high 12 hitters.
Down 1-0, the Pirates responded immediately with Nolan Greckel and Jayson Cook leading of the bottom of the first with back to back singles. Greckel later scored on Brandon Hill’s RBI groundout to tie the game at 1 apiece.
Meanwhile, JLee sat down 12 Trojans in a row, as the Pirate offense took the lead in the 5th on Jayson Cook’s RBI groundout. However, CACC responded in the 6th, with 2 out and 1 on, and things seemingly in control, Lee hit a batter, balked and issued a 2 out, 2 run single as the Trojans took a temporary 3-2 lead.
Again, the offense responded, plating 3 runs in the 6th on Trent Simpson’s RBI double, and adding two more runs creating havoc on the bases with some small ball, to give the Pirates a 5-3 lead.
At that point, Logan “Johnny JUCO” Haner took over and was completely dominant in the final three innings, picking up the save. After striking out the side in the 7th, Haner sat down 8 straight batters, before a 2 out single in the 9th. Haner quickly disposed of the final batter to preserve the win for Chatt Valley.
The Pirates will take the field again on Thursday, for a 2:00 pm eastern game against Southern Union.
