Pitching Continues to Overwhelm, as Pirates Sweep Gordon on the Road

Same story, different day.  The Pirate pitching staff continued to overwhelm its opponents in a double header sweep of Gordon College on Friday, taking home a 3-1 win in Game 1 and an 11-5 win game 2.

Game 1 was simply as dominating effort as can be displayed by pitching staff, with Chase Burks earning the start and tossing 4 innings of shutout baseball, with the only blemish being a basehit bunt by the first batter of the game and a 4th inning hit by pitch.  Otherwise, Burks was perfect while adding 4 more strikeouts to his total for the fall.

Offensively, the Pirates did not fair much better, as CVCC and the Highlanders swapped zeroes through the first 5 innings of play, as Chase Adkins relieved Burks for the 5th and 6th.  Facing the minimum, Adkins added to his team leading strikeout total with 3 more to his name.

Finally, the Pirate offense got going in the 6th, as Nolan Greckel singled with one out, and Jay Meuse reached on an error.  After Meuse stole second to give the Pirates runners at 2nd and 3rd with one out, Brandon Hill’s RBI groundout gave CVCC a 1-0 lead.  Not quite finished, Will Campbell tripled home Meuse, while Carson Hughes doubled in Campbell for a 3-0 lead and handed the ball over to Trent Simpson to close things out in the 7th.

It was eventful, but after a strikeout to start the inning, GC followed with a solo homer and 2 walks, before Simpson ended things with a fielder’s choice and punchout to preserve the win and earn the save in a 3-1 victory.

Game 2 showed a bit more offense, but CVCC still continued its dominance on the mound.  Getting on the board right off the bat, the Pirates put up a 3 spot in the first, led by Campbell’s 3rd extra base hit of the day and Simpson’s RBI single.

Up 3-0, starter Christian Vann went to work, tossing 4 solid innings, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits and collecting 6 strikeouts.

The offense kept adding to its lead in each of the first 3 innings, as they put 3 more on the board in the 2nd with a single by Meuse, a 2 run triple by MJ Rookard, and Kurt Ornowski’s RBI single, who enjoyed a 4 for 4 day at the plate.

Up 6-0, the Highlanders scratched for 1 in the 2nd, but the CVCC offense responded again in the third, as Campbell’s 4th double of the day led off the inning and later scored on Simpson’s sacrifice fly to push the lead to 7-1.

GC kept coming, cutting the lead to 7-3 with 2 runs in the 3rd, before CVann stymied the threat.  Jordan Lee relieved Vann for the 5th and 6th, and continued his dominant ways, adding 4 more strikeouts to his stat sheet, although he allowed a run on a flare single.

Meanwhile, back in the 5th, the Pirates essentially put the game away with 4 more runs, keyed by 5 consecutive Pirates reaching base.  Rook led off with a hit by pitch, Ornowski singled, followed by a pair of walks to Brandon Hll and Will Campbell opened the door for a run single by Hughes and another sac fly by Simpson to run the tally to 11-4.

Cody Harrison came on to finish things off in the 7th and promptly loaded the bases and gave up a run with 3 hit by pitches and a walk.  However, he settled down, got to punchouts and an infield pop up to end the game for an 11-5 Pirate win.

CVCC will wrap up its fall outside competition this Thursday at home as they host Columbus State University in a 1:00 double header.
