Picking up where they left off the past two seasons, the Pirate pitching staff tossed 14 innings of beautiful baseball en route to a pair of quality wins against Shelton State and Snead State at Central Alabama’s annual fall invitational tourney.
In Game 1, pitching was the name of the game on both ends, as the Pirate staff held the Bucs to only 2 hits, while Chatt Valley faired only slightly better with 3 knocks of their own.
As the home team in game 1, the Pirates starter, Chase Adkins went to work and did work, tossing three shutout innings, allowing only a flare single, while punching out four hitters in a dominant effort.
Offensively, CVCC scored all the runs they would need in the first inning as Nolan Greckel led off the first with a walk, advanced to second on Tim Kennedy’s groundout, stole third and scored on JT Thomas’s sac fly to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.
Christian Vann entered in the fourth and threw 2 scoreless innings of his own, striking out 2 in the process. Meanwhile the Pirate offense added an insurance run in the fourth, when JT Thomas drew a 1 out walk, and pinch runner, Jaylen Smith stole second, and scored on Brandon Hill’s 2 out RBI single to put the Pirates up 2-0.
After Vann’s 2 scoreless innings, Brandon Hill tossed a 1-2-3 6th to keep the Bucs off of the board.
Closer, Cody Harrison came on in the 7th to shut things down. After two routine groundouts for outs 1 and 2, Harrison allowed a walk and a single before striking out the final batter to shut the door on Shelton State in a 2-0 win.
Game 2, the offense went nuts, exploding for 8 runs on Snead State after falling behind 1-0 on a handful of seeing eye singles in the first off of starter Chase Burks. However, Burksy was dominant in the second, going 3 up, 3 down with a pair of punchouts.
In the top of the 3rd, down 1-0, the Pirates put a four spot up, keyed by Brandon Hill’s 2 run triple and Frank Wager’s 2 run double to give the staff all of the support they would need.
Jordan Lee entered for the 3rd and 4th, and sat the Snead State offense down in order, throwing a total of 13 pitches in 2 innings.
Not to be outdone, Logan Haner threw a perfect 5th while striking out the side.
In the top of the 6th, CVCC added 4 more runs, with Kurt Ornowski getting things started with a 2 run double, while Caleb Lynn followed him up with a sac fly, and Trent Simpson finishing things off with an RBI double of his own to push the lead to 8-1.
With the game securely put away, Garrett Deloney tossed a perfect 6th with 2 punchies, while Gavin Crouch closed things out in the 7th, with right fielder, Cole Baggett, throwing a perfect strike to home plate to end the game on a beautiful outfield assist.
The Pirates will go back to outside competition on Wednesday, September 23rd, as they travel to Andrew College for a 2:30 eastern double header.
