Since Auburn University has conducted their invitational fall JUCO classic since the Fall of 2009, the Pirates have have continued to have a quality showing on the Plains. The trend continued as CVCC battled with old and once again, new Southern Division rivals, Alabama Southern and Faulkner State.
In a rematch of the 2014 ACCC Championship game, CVCC started the day off with another good pitching performance from its young staff against the always potent Eagle offense of AL Southern. After 2 scoreless innings by both clubs, the Pirates struck first in the top of the 3rd inning, when Kenny Ford and Hunter Webb reached on back to back one out singles to give CVCC runners at 1st and 3rd. A double steal by Ford and Webb gave the Pirates an early 1-0 lead.
Starter Trevor Guthrie was solid, and even dominant during his 4 innings of work, as he allowed only 3 hits in his outing. Unfortunately, the all came in the third inning which resulted in 3 Eagle runs.
After Guthrie exited with a 1-2-3, 2 strikeout 4th, freshman lefty, Christian Vann symied the Eagles in his 2 innings of work to give the Pirates a chance in the top of the 7th.
After holding Alabama Southern to only 3 hits on the day, the Pirates tallied 9 hits, but squandered scoring opportunities all day long. JT Thomas led of the 7th with a single, and Kenny Ford reached on a one out walk. After an attempted steal by a pinch runner, Webb reached on a hit by pitch and Brandon Whiteford reached on an error, all with 2 outs. Ryan Hagan hammered a ball in the 4 hole, but the Eagle 2nd baseman made a nice play to end the threat and preserve the 3-2 win.
In the nighcap, freshman flame thrower, Landon Faulkner got the start and was completely overpowering in his four innings of work, allowing 2 unearned runs, while surrendering only one hit and punching out 4 Sunchiefs.
The CV offense, once again, struck first, as JT Thomas got things going in the second, with a lead off single, followed by singles from Grayson Ivey, Drew Lingo, Tim Kennedy, and Hunt Webb to put a three spot on the board for the Pirates.
After Faulkner State scored their 2 unearned runs off of 2 infield errors to cut the lead to 3-2 after 3 innings, the Pirate bullpen was simply perfect the rest of the game, tossing 4 perfect innings of relief, starting with Lando’s final 4th inning.
Nik Verbeke entered in the 5th and punched out 2 Faulkner hitters, to give way to the Pirate offense for more scoring. Webb, finished off a 3 hit game with a lead off single, followed by Ford’s sacrifice bunt. After a Ryan Hagan walk, Tyler Lynn delivered a run single to extend the lead to 5-2.
Jordan Lee entered in the 6th and collected 3 outs on 7 pitches, with one punchout and 2 groundballs.
The Pirates added a final insurance run in the 6th inning on three consecutive singles to start the frame, by JT Thomas, Frank Wager, and and RBI pinch hit single by Evan Troutt to push the lead to 6-2.
Austin Thomas took over from there to close things out, as he struck out the side in the 7th, all looking, to finish off a great day all the way around for CVCC.
