In what has been an eventful two-thirds of a season thus far, the Chattahoochee Valley Pirates added another accolade to the 2014 campaign in tossing its second no hitter of the season in a double header sweep at Thomas University on Wednesday by the scores of 11-0 and 13-0.
“Coach” Mitch Shelby took the mound for CVCC in Game 1 and tossed 3 shutout innings, allowing 2 hits and striking out 2 Nighthawks.
The offense scored early and often, as the Pirates built a 2-0 lead in the first on John Holland’s RBI double and Jared Martin’s run scoring single. The Pirates added 2 more in the second, as Jeff Ronpirin’s RBI groundout scored the 4th run of the game.
Meanwhile, it was a Johnny Wholestaff day, as the Pirate pitchers got some much needed live work. Kevin Moore, Tyler Welch, and Trevor Guthrie all threw up zeroes in their inning, allowing only 1 hit and striking out 5.
Another first occured, as forgotten man, Colt Ramsey, made his season debut for CVCC, after recovering from shoulder tendonitis. After a shaky start, walking the first 2 batters he faced, Ramsey settled in and punched out the side on 9 straight pitches, returning to his old self.
The offense never stopped along the way adding 3 in the third keyed by a Cam Sperry 2 run triple. Up 7-0, Martin recorded another ribby on a sac fly in the 4th while Jake Maziar made his return to the lineup after a 4 week hamstring injury by simply collecting 3 hits and smashing a 3 run homer in the 5th to push the final to 11-0.
Cody Sheffield made his first start of the year in game 2 on way to a 4 man combined no hitter. Sheff tossed 3 innings, striking out 4, and walking 3.
In a 0-0 game in the third, the Pirate offense absolutely erupted, as they plated 12 runs in the inning, as they batted around twice. A Trevor Kieboom 2 run single, a Cam Sperry 3 run homer, a Reid Michalek RBI double, a Jeff Ronpirin RBI single, a John Holland RBI triple, and a Sam Knight RBI double highlighted the 12 run explosion.
It was cruise control from their as Matt Evenson punched out 2 in the fourth, Payne Kosobucki threw a 1-2-3 5th, and closer Chris Brown came on and finished off the no-no in the 6th, en route to 13-0 win.
This marks the second no-hitter of the season, as Kevin Moore and Mitch Shelby combined to pull the trick in the second game of the season against LaGrange College.
The Pirates are now 31-7 on the year and have nothing but conference play the rest of the way, as they travel to Alexander City on Friday and Saturday for a 3 game set with the Trojans of Central Alabama.
