On Tuesday, the Pirates stepped out of conference play and headed down to Brewton, Alabama to take on old Southern Division foe, Jefferson Davis in single non-conference contest. With the offense rolling early and starter Matt Evenson dominant on the mound, the Pirates brought an 8-2 win back to Phenix City.
Evenson was in control from the get go, with his fastball sitting between 90-93 mph during his 5 innings of work. He allowed only 2 hits and struck out three throwing only 9 off speed pitches in his 67 pitch effort.
The offense started with a bang, when leadoff hitter, Jeff Ronpirin raked a double down the left field line to get things going for the Pirates to start the game. John Holland followed suit and stroked a double of his own to plate Ronpirin. After Holland was caught stealing and Jared Martin walked and advanced to third on a wild pitch, Trevor Kieboom put the Pirates up 2-0 on his RBI ground out.
Meanwhile, Evenson retired the first 6 Warhawks in order and the offense had a 4 run explosion in third to essentially put the game out of reach. Jared Martin, Trevor Kieboom, and Cam Sperry got things going with back to back to back one out singles. After a double steal, in which Sperry stole home, Grayson Ivey came up with a huge 2 out, 2 run single to extend the lead to 6-0.
Evenson continued his doiminant work for the next 3 innnings, throwing zeroes on the scoreboard through his 5 innings of work.
The Pirate offense got right back at ’em in the fourth, when Baby Lynn reached on a hit by pitch, stole second and third, and scored on Jared Martin’s RBI rope to left field.
Up 7-0, Coach Thomas turned to the bullpen. “Coach” Mitch Shelby came on and allowed 2 runs before Trevor Guthrie settled things down over the next inning and two thirds, posting zeroes, while striking out 2. With the score 7-2, Tyler Welch, did his job in the 8th, getting 3 outs on 3 pitches.
Chatt Valley added an insurance run for closer Chris Brown, when James Cunningham reached on a 2 out walk, stole second and advanced to third when Lynn reached on an error. John Holland delivered another 2 out run scoring single to put the game away at 8-2.
Brownie came on in the 9th and had a boring 1-2-3 affair, while adding a strikeout to his stat sheet.
The 7th ranked Pirates are now 20-7 on the season and will go back to conference play on Friday, as they host Wallace State-Selma for a 2:00 pm eastern game at Howard Lake Field.
