With less than 100 hours until the first pitch of the 2014 Chattahoochee Valley Baseball Season, both the NJCAA and Perfect Game USA recognized ten members of the 12th ranked Pirates in their respective preseason players to watch lists.
Perfect Game USA released their top 200 Junior College prospects and the list contained three Pirates: RHP Dalton Rentz, SS John Holland, and 3B Trevor Kieboom.
Rentz, the Pirate ace, came in as the 60th ranked juco prospect in the country. The Auburn signee was 10-1 with a 2.44 ERA as a freshman and was a first team All Region selection. John Holland, a Florida State transfer, will anchor the Pirate infield at shortstop and will certainly be in the mix as a player of the year candidate, landed just inside the top 100 at # 99. Trevor Kieboom, a Clemson transfer, will man both corner infield positions and handle DH duties, as well, checked in at # 188, and should compete as one of the top sluggers in the ACCC in 2014.
Additionally, the NJCAA released it’s annual list of top returning players and the Pirates led Region 22 with 8 members. On the position player end of things, South Carolina signee, catcher Jared Martin made the list, along with second baseman turned outfielder, Jeff Ronpirin, along with fellow outfielder, Sam Knight.
Martin, an All Conference selection in 2013 hit .337 with 16 doubles, 3 homers, and 45 RBI’s. Ronpirin was a Mr. Do It All for the Pirates, as he settled in as the leadoff hitter in April and slugged.366 with 20 RBI’s, while Sam “Wham” Knight hit .304 with 19 RBI’s for the Pirates.
Not surprisingly, CVCC had numerous pitchers on the NJCAA’s list with virtually the entire staff returning. Leading the charge was Rentz, but joining him on the list were Hunter Mitchell, Colt Ramsey, Kevin Moore, and Chris Brown.
Mitchell was 5-5 in 2013 with a 3.31 ERA and 55 strikeouts. Colt Ramsey, a Georgia Southern University signee, boasted a 3-0 record with 2.08 ERA while Kevin Moore, a University of South Alabama signee, went 3-1 with a 1.50 ERA with an astounding 38 K’s in only 24 innings. And finally, closer Chris Brown, also a Georgia Southern signee, made the list after going 2-0 with 3 saves and a 0.66 ERA in 2013.
Congratulations goes out to these young men, as their recognition is well deserved. The Pirates will open their season on Saturday, February 1st versus LaGrange College for a 1:30 pm eastern double header. The Pirates were originally scheduled to open Friday against Jefferson Davis, however, due to the snow and ice in the Chattahoochee Valley area, that game has been moved to Sunday the 2nd for a 2:00 pm start.
