In an offensively horrendous output on Thursday, the Pirates dropped their first game against a junior college this fall, as the Warhawks of Jeff Davis downed the Pirates 5-3 on the campus of Alabama State.
Mitch Shelby got the start for the Pirates and tossed 5 very solid innings, surrendering only a single run in the first. However, he went into shutdown mode for the remainder of his outing.
With the score 1-0 in favor of the Warhawks, Jared Martin led off the fifth inning with a single and advanced on Jake Maziar’s ground out. Trevor Kieboom then hammered a single to centerfield to knot the game at one apiece.
The Pirate offense took the lead the very next inning, when 3 consecutive hit by pitches to Grayson Ivey, Keltin DeVoe, and TIm Kennedy loaded the bases for Edwin Arias’s RBI single to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead.
Reliever Trevor Guthrie came on in the 6th and pitched well, but a leadoff walk came back to haunt the Pirates, as the Warhawks tied the score at 2-2. Guthrie struck out the side in the 7th to keep things tied.
Unfortunately, Cody Sheffield had a rough outing, surrendering 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning, allowing 2 hits, and a walk to hand Jeff Davis a 5-2 lead.
The Pirate offense made some noise in the 9th on Arias’s 2 out walk, followed by a JD Perry single and Jared Martin’s RBI single to pull within 5-3. Unfortunately, it was not enough, as the Pirates dropped a 5-3 decision.
Game 2 versus Faulkner State was rained out. The Pirates will head back up to Bama State on Thursday to face Snead State at noon and Calhoun at 5:00 pm eastern.
