Since conference play began, runs have been tough to come by for the Chattahoochee Valley offense. Such was the case on Friday at Golden Park, however, freshman starter, Dalton Rentz, made it even more difficult for the Marion Military hitters, as he led the Pirates in a 2-0 opening series win over the visiting Tigers.
Rentz was absolutely magnificent in his 8 innings of work, allowing only 3 hits and striking out 10 Marion hitters. After a 1 out triple in the 3rd, Rentz did not allow another baserunner until the 9th, when the Tigers mounted a brief rally by striking for back to back base hits off of the Big Donkey.
The Pirates would scrap for all of the offense they need in the fourth inning, as Jared Martin led off with a single, followed by a one out walk to Ty Abbott, and catcher Cody Walker cleaned them all up with a smash to the left centerfield wall for a 2 run double to put the Pirates up 2-0.
Rentz made that lead stick as the Tiger hitters had no answer. After the afore mentioned back to back singles in the 9th, Nick Jones came on to finish off MMI, as he recorded a sacrifice bunt out and then one of the most odd double plays you will ever see to end a game. With runners at second and third, Jonesy induced a comebacker in which he threw to Abbott at first base for the second out. The Tiger runner raced home and then found himself in the wrong end of a rundown for the final out of the game.
In action earlier this week, the Pirates traveled to Faulkner University to face off against their JV team and walked away with 2 convincing victories, 18-2 and 18-0.
The day gave the Pirates an opportunity to get many of the pitching staff some live work, as 8 pitchers saw action on Wednesday.
Most of the offensive damage was done via the walk and hit by pitch, but the Pirates smashed 3 homers on the day off the bats of Gaige Garrett, Ty Abbott and Nick Jones.
With a commanding lead, CVCC was allowed to have a little fun, as many of the Pirate pitchers received at bats in the day with 3 coming away with hits (Casey Hanna, Nate Morris, and Dylan Lee).
The Pirates are now 28-4 on the year and 6-4 in ACCC Central Division play. The Pirates go right back to work on Saturday at Golden Park against Marion Military with a 1:00 pm eastern double header.
