The conference season has been insofar unkind to the top ranked Pirates of Chattahoochee Valley, however, the non-conference slate has been nothing but sheer dominance on the part of the swashbucklers from Phenix City. That dominance continued in a last minute addition to the schedule to compensate for several rain out games, as the Pirates swept LaGrange College 11-1 and 8-2 behind strong pitching and timely hitting.
Game 1 was all Matt Evenson, all day long. The freshman righty, making his second straight non-conference start, before entering the conference rotation next week, was literally unhittable for 99% of the game, as he took a no hitter to the final strike of the game, before a single to right field spoiled his shot being a part of CVCC history. Evenson eventually allowed another hit and a run to score on a passed ball, but nonetheless, threw a gem of a game going the distance in the 5 inning shortened game, allowing only the 2 hits, with 1 unearned run, while punching out 9 Panthers in the process.
Offensively, the Pirates scored early and often, as Jeff Ronpirin collected his first of three hits in the second inning to put the Pirates up 2-0.
A four run explosion in the third was keyed by Cody Walker’s double and RBI singles by Jerric Johnson and Ronpirin. The Pirate offense added 4 more in the 4th, as Sam Knight stroked an RBI single to left field and Ronpirin collected his third hit of the day, this time driving in 2 runs.
Chris Laye added a triple in the 5th and later scored on Timmy Massengale’s RBI groundout to complete the CVCC scoring at 11 runs on the day.
The nightcap saw a plethora of pitchers in Kevin Moore, Cody Sheffield, Payne Kosobucki, Chris Brown, and Colt Ramsey.
Chatt Valley looked to pick up where they left off by scoring 2 in the top of the first on RBI singles by Jared Martin and Ty Abbott.
Moore and Sheffield did their parts through their innings of work, throwing zeroes up on the scoreboard. LaGrange pulled within 1 in the third as they scratched for a run off of reliever, Payne Kosobucki. Fortunately, the Pirates answered with 2 more in the 4th on Ty Abbott’s RBI triple and Cam Sperry’s sacrifice fly.
After a scoreless 4th by Kosobucki, CVCC added 4 runs in the 5th to essentially put the game away. Jeff Ronpirin and Nick Jones highlighted the scoring by driving in 3 runs betweent them. Up 8-2 comfortably, the bullpen got some much needed work, as Chris Brown and Colt Ramsey tossed the 6th and 7th striking out 6 of the 7 hitters they faced.
The sweep puts the # 1 ranked Pirates at 22-4 on the season. Chattahoochee Valley will return to conference play on Friday, as they travel to Selma, Alabama to face the Patriots of Wallace State in a 3 game conference set. Friday’s single game and Saturday’s double header are both slated for a 1:00 pm eastern start.
