Climbing to the top of the mountain is one thing, but staying there is another. The top ranked Pirates dropped their second straight Central Divsion series on Sunday to a determined Southern Union ball club by the score of 8-3.
After jumping out 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning, the Pirates had a chance to do some real damage and give starter, Hunter Mitchell, a comfortable lead. However, with the bases loaded and none out with the heart of the Pirate order up, all they could manage was an infield popup and 2 strikeouts, to let the Bison off the hook.
Mitchell did his part to keep the Pirates in the game and give them a chance to win, until Southern Union finally got to him in the 4th on 2 doubles to knot the game at 1 apiece. With an opportunity to get out of the inning with minimal damage, the Pirates continued to shoot themselves in the foot by allowing 2 more runs on a balk and a 2 out error finding themselves on the wrong end of a 3-1 score.
Mitchell continued to hold the Bison at bay through 6 innings and was relieved by Nate Morris in the 6th inning, but allowed an RBI single to the SUCC # 9 hitter to push the deficit to 4-1.
The offense tried to muster some life in the 6th, when Cody Walker and Cam Sperry reached on back to back errors and were driven home on Luke Ewing’s triple to climb within 1 run.
Unfortunately, the wheels fell off in the 8th, when the Bison plated 4 runs to put the game away with 4 hits and a hit by pitch to extend their lead to 8-3. Chatt Valley would go quietly in the 7th, 8th and 9th, as they never threatened again.
The Pirates are now 20-4 on the season and are 2-4 in league play. After Monday’s game at Point University was cancelled by the Point administration, the Pirates will next take the field at LaGrange College on Wednesday, March 20th for a 3:00 pm double header.
