Garrett Paces Offense in 16-9 Win

It wasn’t exactly the prettiest win the Pirates have put together this season, but it was a win nonetheless, as the Pirates were able to empty the bench in an offensive explosion to down the Point University Skyhawks 16-9.

With weather playing a part of on field practice time, the lack thereof showed up early, as 2 first inning errors put the Pirates on the wrong end of a 3-0 deficit.  However, starter Hunter Mitchell (2-0) calmly took things into his own hands, throwing 5 complete innings, allowing no earned runs and only 2 hits in a 9 strikeout performance.

The offense got going as well, as they put a run on the board in the first on back to back to back 2 out hits by Jared Martin, Nick Jones and Ty Abbott to cut the lead to 3-1.

After Mitchell shut down the Skyhawk hitters, the offense exploded for 4 runs in the second inning, as Gaige Garrett’s 2 run double followed by Martins RBI double put the Pirates on top 5-3.

Right back at them in the 4th inning, Nick Jones added to the lead with a sacrifice fly to put the Pirates up 6-3.

Things really opened up in the 5th, as Chatt Valley sent 12 hitters to the plate, en route to an 8 run inning.  Garrett added his second 2 RBI double of the day, while Martin drove in 2 more and Cam Sperry hit an absolute mammoth 2 run homerun that nearly hit the Columbus Civic Center.  Cody Walker finished off the scoring in the 5th with an RBI double of his own. 

Leading 14-3, the Pirates infield defense cost them a mercy rule shortened game, as 2 errors led to 4 runs for the Skyhawks to keep the game alive at 14-7.

Dylan Lee came on and steadied the ship with a clean 1 2/3 innings while Sperry added another run to the scoreboard with an RBI double in the 7th.  After James Cunningham scored on a passed ball to push the tally to 16-7, Mitch Shelby closed the game out in the 9th, allowing an 2 runs (1 unearned) to cap off another Pirate win, with the final score Good Guys 16, Bad Guys 9.

The win puts the Pirates at 13-0 on the season.  They Pirates are set to hit their first big road trip of 2013 this week as they head to West Georgia Tech on Tuesday for a 1:05 eastern time start.
