The Pirates welcomed one of their old non-conference rivals to town on Thursday in Georgia Perimeter College at their home away from home at Golden Park. The Pirates put together one of their more complete games of the season in a 9-0 shutout of the Jaguars.
Starter Ben Taylor was magnificent in his 6 innings of work, allowing only 3 hits on the day, while only one of those batters made it to second base. Big Ben punched out 7 Jaguar hitters, while walking none, earning his 3rd win of the season.
The Pirate offense got going early, plating 2 runs in the first inning on Ty Abbott’s 2 out double, scoring Dominique Smedley and Nick Jones to give the Pirates an early 2-0 cushion.
The Pirates went right back to work in the 4th inning, as they took advantage of the Jaguar pitcher’s wildness, collecting 4 free passes in the inning, 2 of which drove in runs. The 5th inning saw the Pirate increase their lead to 5-0 with a David Levy 2 out, RBI single to score Timmy Massengale.
With Taylor’s day done after the 6th and leaving with a 5-0 lead, Dalton “Big Donkey” Rentz came in and put up zeroes in the 7th and 8th, allowing a single while striking out two.
The Pirate offense finished off the day by scoring 4 insurance runs in the eighth inning with RBI singles by Nick Jones and Cody Walker.
Nate Morris shut the door in the 9th inning, tossing 92 mph fastballs by the Perimeter hitters en route to a 1-2-3 inning in which he fanned 2 Jaguar hitters.
The win pushes the Pirates to 12-0 on the season as they prepare to host Point University’s JV squad on Sunday, February 24th at 2:00 pm eastern at Golden Park.
