With another solid effort on the mound by the Pirate pitching staff and some late inning offense, the Pirates of Chattahoochee Valley turned a 1-0 nailbiter into a 6-1 comfortable win over the Knights of West Georgia Tech on Thursday.
Kevin Moore earned his second start of the young season and although battling command issues, still managed to toss 4 innings of 1 hit, shutout baseball. Moore struck out 6 hitters while walking five.
The Pirate offense went to work in the third when Jared Martin and Nick Jones hammered back to back two out doubles to put the Pirates up 1-0.
After Moore was lifted, Colt Ramsey came in the 5th and tossed 2 2/3 innings of 1 hit baseball himself, allowing no runs and striking out 4, earning his first collegiate win in his relief stint of Moore. Ramsey gave way to Nick Jones, who continued his dominant pitching by striking out all 4 batters he faced.
In the meantime, the Pirates added a little insurance in their half of the seventh, when Dominique Smedley led off with a triple and scored on James Cunningham’s single. After stealing second base, Cunningham scored on a Ty Abbott double down the right field line and later scored on Timmy Massengale’s mammoth double to deep centerfield to put the Pirates up 4-0.
Not yet finished, the offense added two more in the eighth, as Gaige Garrett and David Levy scored, aided by a throwing error by the Knights pitcher and by an RBI single by Smedley, who finished 3-5 and only a homerun shy of hitting for the cycle.
Casey Hanna came on in the 9th to record the final three outs, allowing a meaningless unearned run to finish out a 6-1 Pirate victory.
The 8-0 Pirates will play host to Andrew College on Friday at Golden Park for a 2:00 pm eastern time start.
