The Chattahoochee Valley Pirates “home” opener at Golden Park was simply golden. In dominating fashion, the boys from Chatt Valley took care of the Bobcats of East Georgia College with a 10-2 convincing victory on a beautiful February afternoon.
Kevin Moore, a freshman from Mobile’s St. Paul Episcopal School, made his collegiate debut as a starter for the Pirates. After walking the first 2 batters of the game, he was virtually unhittable for the next 5 frames. Moore allowed only 2 hits, while punching out a team high on the young season, 11 Bobcat hitters.
Offensively, the Pirates scored early and often, as Dominique Smedley led the game off with a walk and eventually scored on Jared Martin’s single to right field.
In the Pirate half of the second, Cody Walker and Jeff Ronpirin got things going with back to back 1 out walks, followed by a Smedley single and an RBI hit by James Cunningham.
The Pirates played some fundamental “get ’em on, get ’em over, and get ’em in” baseball, as Big Time Timmy Jim Massengale doubled to lead off the third inning. Jerric Johnson moved him to third and Cody Walker scored him with an RBI groundout, all occuring on the first 3 pitches of the inning.
After Moore left with a 4-0 lead, a quintuplet of freshman relievers came on to preserve the lead and eventual win, as Payne Kosobucki tossed the 6th, Colt Ramsey the 7th, Chris Brown the eighth, and Matt Evenson the 9th. The bullpen allowed only 6 hits and 2 unearned runs over the final 4 frames.
The Pirates went right back to work in the 6th inning, plating 3 more runs on an RBI single by Nick Jones, an RBI double by Ty Abbott, and a sac fly by BTTJ Massengale to extend the lead to 7-1.
Chatt Valley finished off the scoring with 3 runs in the eighth with a Johnson sac fly, Walker’s second hit and second RBI of the day, and a pinch hit double by Gaige Garrett that narrowly missed leaving the yard.
The 4-0 Pirates will take a few days off before hosting John A. Logan College for a 3 game weekend set, beginning on Friday at 2:00 pm eastern.
