Pirates Put the Wraps on Fall with Iron Pirate Games

In CVCC Baseball tradition, the Pirate baseball team engaged in a two week long battle of wits, strength, stamina, guts, and pure toughness in the fourth annual Iron Pirate Games to conclude the fall semester.

The top 5 points leaders in the semester long individual Iron Pirate competition are named captains of 7 man teams.  This year’s captains were Nate Morris, JD Perry, Dominique Smedley, Ben Taylor, and Cody Walker.

Each day brought its own set of adventures in some variation of a CrossFit style challenge.  In a true “strength of the wolf is the pack and the strength of the pack is the wolf” sense, each team is only as strong as its weakest link.

The Games culminated yesterday with the annual grand finale that included 17 grueling events in which each individual must contribute.  With Team Perry holding a slight edge over the rest of the field going into the final day, Team Walker rallied to take a brief lead at the half way point.  Not to be outworked, Team Smedley came on strong to push the envelope to the days final 2 events.  Although eliminated with 6 events to go, Team Morris pushed through to the end to throw a monkey wrench into the final standings.  However, with only 2.5 points separating 4 teams from the Iron Pirate Championship, the 4 remaining teams headed into the final event of the day, the 400 meter sprint, as a winner take all ultimate finish.

In all, it was one of, if not the, top overall team performances in the history of the Iron Pirate Games.  Coach Adam Thomas had this to say, “Watching these men compete over these past two weeks has been one of the more awesome exhibits of effort and toughness I’ve witnessed in my career.  The work ethic that they displayed over the course of ‘The Games’ was absolutely incredible.  I cannot tell you how proud I am of this team.  They are special – very special.  The competitive spirtit that was shown by every individual was something to behold.  They simply got after it every single day.  There was no sense of quit and there was nothing but sheer fight in every rep these young men completed.  My hat’s off to Team Taylor in winning the 2012 Iron Pirate Games.”

Team Taylor was comprised of Captain Ben Taylor, Matt Evenson, Luke Ewing, Casey Hanna, Hunter Mitchell, Kevin Moore, and Joey Stringfellow.
