After four weeks of playing good baseball, the Pirate baseball team was beginning to gel and the confidence was spreading throughout the team as they headed to Faulkner University to participate in the ACCC Umpire Tournament in Montgomery, Alabama.
ACCC UMPIRE TOURNAMENT, October 5
CVCC vs. Shelton State
In a fall that was a series of rematches of previous opponents from previous tournaments, the Pirates once again saw Northern Division powerhouse, Shelton State. As has been the theme for the Pirates all fall, the pitching staff ruled, as Ben Taylor took the ball for CVCC in his second start versus the Bucs. One week later, the results were exactly the same – 3 shutout innings of baseball with 3 punchouts.
The Pirates struck first with a single run in the bottom of the 3rd inning when David Levy and Gaige Garrett led off with a single. Luke Ewing reached on a fielder’s choice and Dominique Smedley eventually scored Levy with a fielder’s choice of his own to give Chatt Valley a 1-0 lead.
Dalton Rentz took over from there with three completely overpowering innings in which he struck out 6 Shelton State hitters, including striking out the side in the 4th.
The offense went back to work in the bottom of the 6th when Jeff Ronpirin and Ty Abbott had back to back singles with one out. Nick Jones promptly followed with a sacrifice fly to deep center field to easily score Ronpirin to give the Pirates a 2 run cushion.
Clinging to a 2-0 lead, closer Kevin Moore promptly shut the door empatically in an uneventful 7th inning preserving the win for the Pirates over Shelton for the second consecutive week.
CVCC vs. Faulkner State
After a few weeks of pitching duels, the Faulkner State game became a back and forth offensive showdown. The Pirates served as the visitors and jumped on the Sun Chiefs first on back to back singles by Matt Nettles and Cody Walker with one out in the first. Ben Williams promptly followed with an RBI double to score Nettles with Sam Knight then plating Walker on an RBI groundout to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead.
Starter Nate Morris had some tough luck in the first, giving up 2 runs (one unearned) as the Chiefs tied the game 2-2 and took a temporary 3-2 in the second on a two out single off of Casey Hanna.
The Pirates fought right back in the fourth scoring 2 runs on RBI singles by Kevin Moore and Timmy Massengale. The 4-3 lead was short lived, as Faulkner State knotted the game at 4 apiece on a sacrifice fly off of reliever Payne Kosobucki.
The back and forth dance continued in the 5th, as the Pirates pushed 2 more runs across on Williams’ second RBI base knock of the day, while Sam Knight followed him up with an RBI single of his own, to put CV on top 6-4.
The Sun Chiefs still had a little left in the tank as they scratched for a single run in their half of the 5th inning off of Dylan Lee to pull within 1 run. However, the Pirate bullpen went into shutdown mode for the final 2 frames, as Hunter Mitchell continued his dominating pitching in the 6th inning and Nick Jones threw a perfect 7th for the save to preserve a well played 6-5 Pirate win.
