In a rare mid-conference, non-conference game, the Pirates traveled to Montgomery, Alabama on Monday afternoon and made quick work of the JV Eagles of Faulkner University, in a 24-6 win.
Daniel Szathmary earned the win in his 4 innings of work for CVCC, surrendering 4 hits, while striking out 5. Offense was the name of the game for the Pirates, as they posted 18 hits, 11 hit by pitches and 6 walks in the 10 run rule shortened affair.
The Pirates went to work right away, as Martin Castro worked a lead off walk and David Levy prompty scored him with a double. JD Perry plated the second run of the inning with a bases loaded hit by pitch. After a Nick Jones double in the second put the Pirates ahead 4-0, the scoring onslaught began with 3 more in the third, highlighted by Tim Massengale’s 2 run double and 5 more in the fourth, in which Levy drove in 2 more.
After a scoreless 5th and the score 12-6, CV struck for 8 in the 6th inning, as 5 free passes and a Neal Chambless 2 run double finally put the game away. However, the scoring wasn’t over, as the PIrates pushed 4 more runs across in the 7th, highlighted by Matt Nettles 2 RBI triple.
Will Thomas and Matt Vollenweider worked a perfect 6th and 7th to end the game early. Offensively, Dominique Smedley had a career day, going 4 for 5. Levy continued his hot play, with 3 more hits and 4 more RBI’s. Tim Massengale also added 2 hits with 2 more RBI’s.
The Pirates improve to 17-11 on the year and go back to ACCC Central Division play on Wednesday, as they host Central Alabama Community College for a 2:00 pm eastern start time.
