The Pirates evened up their conference record on Tuesday, with a 5-2 win over visiting Wallace State-Selma Community College.
Sophomore righty, Dustin Dunagan pitched 6 2/3 solid innings, giving up 2 runs on 6 hits, while striking out 3 Selma hitters and inducing 7 ground ball outs. CVCC jumped on top early with a single run in the bottom of the first, when Martin Castro led off with a double, followed by David Levy’s single. Castro later scored on Tim Massengales RBI ground out. The Pirates scored in the third with a little excitement as Jared Kahn, who led off the inning with a single, was seemingly stranded at third with 2 outs, stole home to put the Pirates on top 2-0. Kahn’s speed aided the Pirates again in the 5th, when after drawing a one out walk stole 2nd base and scored on a Martin Castro RBI single.
Selma pulled within a run in the top of the 6th as a 2 out, 2 RBI single brought the score to 3-2. Catcher Neal Chambless quickly ended the threat by throwing out a Patriot base runner to end the inning. The Pirates quickly answered as Nick Jones, leading off the next half inning, hit the first pitch he saw over the right field wall for his 3rd homer of the year and extending the CVCC lead to 4-2. Chambless later plated a huge insurance run with an 8th inning double. The bullpen took over from there, as Trace McDaniel pitched an inning and 2/3 of scoreless baseball, while Matt Vollenweider recorded the final 2 outs to earn his 4th save of the season.
Chatt Valley improves to 15-11 on the season and 2-2 in conference play. The Pirates will travel to Marion Military Institute on Thursday, March 8th for a 2:00 eastern conference game.
