Sun Finally Out, Pirates Set for Season Opener

With the Phenix City area being pounded with rain and thunderstorms all week, the season opener for the 2012 Pirates looked to be very much in doubt.  With mother nature giving her last heave ho at Howard Lake Field on Thursday afternoon, Friday morning gave way to plenty of blue skies and sunshine for the weekend.  Although saturated and soft, The Lake is ready for some weekend baseball as the Pirates open the 2012 campaign by playing host to the Andrew College Tigers Saturday at 1:00 pm eastern.  With a veteran team returning, the swashbucklers from Chatt Valley begin their Two Time ACCC Southern Division title defense with sophomore lefty, Mike O’Neal on the mound in Game 1 of Saturday’s double header.  Game 2 on Saturday will pit big righty, Zach Helewski against the Tigers.  The Pirates and Tigers will wrap up their three game weekend set on Sunday in Cuthbert, Georgia with a single 9 inning game at 1:00 eastern, with sophomore southpaw, Clint “Big Cat” Spratlin toeing the rubber for the Pirates.
