Pirates 2009 Fall Update - 10/21/09

The Pirates are enjoying an excellent fall thus far, posting a 13-2 record in exhibition play. The Pirates kicked off the fall schedule with doubleheader splits against Andrew College and ABAC before rattling off 11 straight victories, including decisive wins against conference foe Enterprise-Ozark Community College and Northern Division rivals Gadsden State. CV concluded its fall JUCO schedule with an exciting win at Auburn University against Panhandle Conference power Gulf Coast Community College. The Pirates were too much for the Commodores both at the plate and on the mound as CV hitters tallied 8 runs while the pitching staff allowed just 2 hits and 1 run.

The recruiting campaign has also gotten off to an outstanding start, with the Pirates collecting commitments from several high priority prospects. Included in the list of early commitments are Dustin Averett, a catcher from Shaw High School in Columbus, GA, Dustin Dunnagan, a right handed pitcher from Winder-Barrow High School in Winder, GA, and Matt Nettles, a left handed pitcher/outfielder from Northside-Warner Robbins High School in Warner Robbins, GA.

The fall has also been an exciting time for Chatt Valley's outstanding sophomore class, who have already given 3 Division I commitments. Derreck Varnadore, a starting pitcher for the Pirates has commited to Auburn University, while Jeff Shields, another big time starter for CV has selected Kennesaw State University as his future home. Kevin Putkonen, an outfielder from Windsor, CT has commited to Samford University for the 2010-2011 season.

All that remains for the Pirates is a showcase exhibition against one of the top Division II programs in the nation, Columbus State University on Thursday, October 22 at 3:00PM. The scrimmage will be a reunion of sorts for many of the players and coaches on both teams, as Chatt Valley has 6 former Pirates currently playing for the Cougars, and the Pirate coaching staff coached an additional 7 Cougar players this past summer on the Columbus Woodbats, a collegiate summer team in the Great South League. The game should be an fantastic event for both programs, and it will serve as a memorable finale to an outstanding fall for the Pirates.

Chatt Valley will conclude all on field baseball activities following the annual Black and Blue World Series, set to begin late next week.
